Scottsdale Arizona-How Tourism Enhances Our Quality of Life

Most of us realize that tourism is our city’s primary industry.

However, besides generating more traffic during event season and making it more difficult to get reservations at good restaurants and book tee times at our great golf courses – few of us are aware of what the booming tourism trade translates into for our pocketbooks and our terrific quality of life.

Here are some of the reasons why I am a strong supporter of tourism and our Scottsdale Convention and Visitors Bureau, and will continue advocating that our city do everything it can to attract more visitors:

Visitors annually spend $4 billion in Scottsdale.  That in turn puts $38 million into the city’s coffers. And that helps make our taxes some of the lowest of any city in the Valley.  Tourism creates 27,000 jobs, or 1 out of every 8 jobs in our city.  The tourism industry also contributes a substantial amount to our property tax revenue that helps fund our schools.

The contributions the tourism trade makes to our city don’t stop there.

We owe a great deal to how the tourists enhance our own quality of life.  Their dollars help keep our streets maintained and beautifully landscaped.  They generate the money to make our parks and libraries some of the best in the country.  In addition, visitors create revenue for the police and fire departments to keep our city safe, which is our number one priority for both visitors and residences.

We should never take all of these things or our visitors for granted – and we should do everything we can to encourage and enhance tourism.

In honor of Memorial Day, please remember and honor those men and women who have protected our freedoms and given their lives in service to our country.

Andy Biggs Surpasses 200% of Required Signatures for Ballot

Phoenix -  Andy Biggs submitted hundreds of additional partisan nomination signatures by Republicans in Arizona’s Fifth Congressional District. Biggs, already having qualified for the primary ballot on the first day of candidate filing, ends the candidate filing period with 3,378 valid signatures from Republican voters.

Biggs released the following statement upon filing the supplemental signatures.:

"Today, I was humbled to file hundreds of more valid signatures with the Secretary of State from Republicans in the East Valley who want a proven conservative leader as their next Congressman. With this latest filing, my campaign has now surpassed over 200% of what is required to make the Republican ballot, a clear indication of the growing momentum for my candidacy.

“Our campaign is built with grassroots volunteers who are extremely dedicated to electing someone who will fight back against the Washington establishment. I humbled by their strong commitment to support my campaign, and I look forward to working with them day and night on the campaign trail as we march towards victory on August 30th.”

Senator Andy Biggs is an Arizona native and has lived in Gilbert with his family for the past 25 years. He is married to Cindy and they have six children. He is a retired attorney and is licensed to practice in Arizona, Washington, and New Mexico. Virginia Korte-Community Policing Improves Our Quality of Life

Scottsdale is not only one of the safest cities in the Valley or even Arizona – it is also one of the safest cities in the entire country.

Obviously, the police officers patrolling our streets and responding to our calls should receive most of the credit for keeping crime under control.   Citizens also play a critical role in keeping our city safe.  When we are vigilant and looking out for one another we avoid becoming victims.

I doubt that there is a city anywhere in the country that enjoys a better working relationship between its citizens and police department than
Scottsdale.  We should be proud of that and not take the relationship for granted.

Last week I voted with the majority of the City Council to provide the SPD with additional personnel.  That will ensure the department runs as efficiently as possible minimizing the need for and cost of overtime.  The 2016-2017 fiscal budget will not be finalized until next month.  When it is, it will include funding to help address our downtown parking limits and improve dispatching officers and records processing, which in turn will support our patrol officers.
Everyday the men and women of our police department are prepared to risk their lives to keep our families safe.  That is why they have earned our respect.  They also deserve our continued help and support whenever they need it.

Earlier this week I filed my nominating petitions with our Scottsdale City Clerk Carolyn Jagger.  Thank you to the 1,651 citizens who signed.

Virginia Korte: 🎓Education and Economic Development Create the Cornerstone of Our Community

For those of you who have followed my involvement in our community for the past 30 years, you know about my long-time commitment to education.  You are also aware of my interest in the revitalization of Southern Scottsdale where my family has deep roots for over 40 years.

Education and Southern Scottsdale are the topics of today’s email.

Scottsdale Gateway Alliance, an organization with which I have been affiliated for several years, has discovered some insightful data about Southern Scottsdale residents.  Approximately 2,000 people have taken part in the SGA survey during the past several months.

The survey found that 42% of the respondents have lived in Southern Scottsdale five or less years.  In addition, 57% of them have children enrolled in elementary schools.  From my perspective, the survey indicates that those of us working to revitalize this great area of our city also need to help ensure that our schools are providing students with the resources and opportunities to succeed.

I have committed years of time and effort to many “Yes to Children” campaigns to enrich our Scottsdale Unified School District’s programs and campuses.  In 2007 and 2014 I had the privilege of serving as the Honorary Chair of the “Yes To Children” campaigns; both were successful in passing the SUSD’s budget override proposals.  I will be supporting this group’s future endeavors to improve our schools and offer our students the best possible education.

I believe that building a strong education system and encouraging more economic development work together to create the cornerstone of the Southern Scottsdale community.

Councilwoman Mary Hamway Officially on Primary Ballot to Succeed Representative Kate Brophy McGee

Phoenix, AZ (May 12th) - Councilwoman Mary Hamway today became an official candidate for Arizona's Legislative District 28, submitting over 1,000 signatures to qualify.

She released the following statement:

"I am grateful to the volunteers in Legislative District 28 who have supported my candidacy financially, and with their valuable time by collecting over 1,000 signatures, thus securing my position on the August 30th primary ballot. In the next several months, I look forward to meeting with the voters of District 28 to discuss important issues affecting Arizona such as quality of education for all students, public infrastructure, and streamlining government. I will work diligently to earn the confidence of the voters to become the next representative of Legislative District 28."

Republican Mary Hamway is a current Councilwoman and former Vice Mayor for the Town of Paradise Valley. At the end of her term, ending in December of 2016, Mary will have served ten years on the Paradise Valley Town Council. During her time on the Town Council, she was Chairwoman of the Town's Water Committee and Chair for the restoration of Kiva Athletic Field. She also served as Co-Chair for the Town's 50th Anniversary Visioning Committee and on the Town's General Plan Advisory Committee.

Prior to moving to Arizona in 1994, Mary worked for 18 years in the information technology industry.
