for a Stronger Arizona

Flagstaff, AZ - July 15, 2014 - Republican Andy Tobin, candidate for Arizona’s 1^st Congressional District, released his five point plan to secure our border, spur economic growth, balance the budget, keep our military strong and hold President Obama accountable. Tobin said it’s going to take common-sense conservative principles to turn our country around and stop Obama’s overreach.

“This president is out of control, and it’s going to take people with strong principles to stand up against him. Not only is this administration incompetent, but Obama is acting more like a king than a president. This plan represents some of the most important things I will fight for in Congress," said Andy Tobin.

“With the ongoing crisis at the border that our president has helped cause, securing our border needs to be our priority, first and foremost. Enabling our small businesses to flourish and create jobs will only happen when we reduce taxes and streamline regulations—both of which have hampered our economic recovery,” Tobin said.

As a former small business owner in the aerospace industry, Tobin spoke specifically about the need to invest in defense spending.

“Thousands of Arizona jobs depend on the government making the right investment in the defense industry. At a time when the President is cutting the Pentagon’s budget and giving thousands of well-trained and battle tested military members the pink slip, we need somebody in Congress who will stand up to make sure we are ready to meet emerging national security threats,” said Tobin.

Randy Pullen Candidate AZ State Treasurer Out and About Across Arizona

As Chairman of the Republican Party, it was always a highlight to get out across the state and talk to hardworking Republicans about how we could grow the Party. Running for State Treasurer has given me another opportunity to criss cross from San Luis to Sedona talking about how I am going to protect the tax dollars of hardworking Arizona taxpayers.

Just in the past few weeks I've had the chance to visit Oro Valley, Lake Havasu City, Cottonwood and other rural communities. I've loved the opportunity to talk about my background as a CPA and how I will take that experience to the Treasurers office. It has also given me the chance to talk about important issues like immigration and how we can improve our education system.

We have a handful of events coming up over the next few weeks. I hope we can see you at one of them. Early ballots are being mailed out in just a few weeks so if you need a yard sign, reply to this email and we'll get you one!

Major Event Public Safety bill-Arizona House Republican Caucus

As Majority Leader of the House of Representatives and Prime Sponsor of the Major Event Public Safety bill, I would like to respond to the misinformation regarding House Bill 2547.

The bill was designed to ensure that large, nationally broadcast events in Arizona remain safe.  Public safety is the first priority of government, and that is why I sponsored it. This bill did not require the state to dig into its pocket, but instead used a small portion of the additional money generated by the event for extra security to keep the public safe. Moreover, the bill provided safeguards, with certified financial statements and legislative committee reports, to ensure that all money was used as intended.

Specifically, the bill permitted the state to reimburse host communities, where the event was subject to a competitive bidding process, attracted at least 14,000 attendees and was broadcast live, up to 50 percent of the “extra expense of providing public safety.” The money for extra security was to come directly from the additional sales tax revenues generated by the event itself, not from our general tax dollars.

In light of the importance of public safety and our reputation as a state for making that a priority, the W.P. Carey School of Business at ASU estimated that the 2008 Super Bowl held in Arizona had an economic impact, both direct and indirect, of $500 million.  That is spending that would not have happened in Arizona if the event had not been held here.

This one event generated about $28 million of additional revenue to the state’s General Fund.  That translates into an additional $8.4 million that was distributed from the General Fund to counties and cities; money that Cochise County and the communities within it would not have received if the event had never happened.
My goal with this law was to allow Arizona to continue to welcome large, nationally televised special events without compromising our public safety.  Unfortunately, this bill died in the Senate.
