Arizona Republic: Hallman has "the perfect temperament and experience" for State Treasurer

The Arizona Republic Endorses Hugh Hallman for State Treasurer The Arizona Republic, Arizona's largest newspaper, has endorsed Hugh Hallman for Arizona State Treasurer, saying that "Hugh Hallman has the perfect temperament and experience to take charge of the state's pocketbook."Read the entire editorial at this link.

Some excerpts from the editorial:

"Hallman demonstrated competence as Tempe's mayor from 2004 to 2012, helping guide the city through the recession, cutting the budget and improving its financial standing in the process."

"The state treasurer's job involves receiving funds, paying bills and overseeing the state's investments. Hallman appears to thrive on the kind of attention to minute detail required to be the state's chief banker and the restraint to be a cautious investment officer."

"Hallman says he also wants to be the "chief financial advocate to assist the Legislature and governor in creating sustainable budget practices" including "sufficient reserves to weather the 'bad times.'" Advocacy is not traditionally the role of state treasurer, but Hallman's desire to broaden the reach of the office is not inappropriate. It might benefit the state to have another elected official championing fiscal reality. After all, former Treasurer Dean Martin performed a good service by sounding the alarm in 2009 that the state was running out of money to pay the bills.

"(Hallman) is better suited by experience and temperament to be treasurer than either of his opponents."

The Republic's conclusion:

"This is about who can best administer the state's money and investments. Hugh Hallman is our choice."
