Mayor Scott Smith Condemns Obama
Administration's "Greyhound Bus Immigration Strategy"
PHOENIX — Amid news reports that U.S. Immigration and
Customs Enforcement has bused hundreds of illegal immigrants to Arizona -
literally abandoning these undocumented immigrants at Greyhound Bus terminals in
Phoenix and Tucson - Republican gubernatorial candidate Mayor Scott Smith today
condemned the Obama Administration and the collective federal immigration
agencies "for indulging in the height of stupidity."
Said Smith during a campaign stop in Tucson: "What an astonishing failure of leadership at every level inside the Beltway. President Obama's 'Greyhound Bus strategy' highlights what we really need in Arizona and in America: A real solution to our broken immigration system, one that's based on the rule of law, compassion and the need to bolster the economies of the U.S. and Mexico.
"Buying bus tickets isn't a solution, just like amnesty isn't a solution. Moving illegal immigrants by bus from Texas to Arizona because Texas is overwhelmed at its border solves nothing - and it taxes the already overwhelmed social services and health care systems Arizonans rely on. This isn't compassionate and it certainly isn't leadership. In fact, if I didn't know better, I would think this is Washington's idea of a bad joke."
The recent past President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, Smith says he will continue to forcefully advocate for an immigration solution founded on a secure border with Mexico. Only then, says Smith, can we contemplate earned citizenship for law-abiding would-be Americans who pass a background check, learn English, pay a fine and who go to the back of the immigration line, behind those who have already applied for citizenship.
"As Governor of Arizona, I will make sure Arizona takes a lead role in reforming immigration, and not be subjected to more delays and non-fixes at the hands of Washington."
